Butler High School
Men's Lacrosse
Coach Wiehl | October 28, 2009
As my 3rd season as head coach quickly approaches, I have great expectations for this year’s teams. We have a great group of players already involved and I am looking forward to adding new players to our rosters. Our pre-season conditioning will begin again in January and take us through to the beginning of our 2010 season. Lacrosse as a sport is becoming more recognized by the school district as we are now a sanctioned sport with the availability to play for a state championship. We are still self funded but moving closer to aligning ourselves with other school sports. It appears that we will be in a conference with Providence, Ardrey Kell, South Meck and Myers Park.
In preparation for our upcoming season all players should be taking the initiative to begin getting into shape and make sure that they have their sticks in hand as often as possible. Academics should be a priority for all players wishing to be a member of the team. All players must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher, there are no exceptions. We will announce team and boosters meetings in the near future please be on the lookout for these communications.
I am looking forward to another great season of Butler Lacrosse...
Thank You for another fun season. After having some time to reflect on this past season, I would have to say that overall it was a success. The team record was not where I would have liked it to be, but I feel really good about many things that happened this season.
I feel that we grew as individuals as well as a team. The only thing that this program really lacks is Lacrosse experience; once we achieve that I think we will be in great shape. We have athletes and players that want to be successful; we simply have not been involved with the sport long enough.
In order to bring this program to the next level here are some steps that can be taken in the off season.
1. Have a stick in hand as much as possible. Wall Ball, Summer League, Have a catch with a friend. Stick skills are the most important part of the game, nothing can get accomplished if we are playing defense all the time.
2. Physical Conditioning. Running, lifting weights or simply going outside rather than watching TV all day. As we all know this is a physical game, the better shape we are in, the bigger the impact we will we will have on the field. This will also help to reduce the amount of injuries.
3. Join summer leagues and attend camps if possible/available. This will help with stick skills as well as develop a better sense of field awareness. This is the experience part that we need. Being on the field at a camp or summer league will allow you to develop skills that you can bring back to our team in the spring season. If you are able to attend events like these, be sure to listen to the coaches. Even if its not something that I teach you, use it as a tool that you will be able to help build our program with.
Watch and Learn. Many skills and techniques can be picked up by watching others play and watching yourself play. Thanks to Mr. Prince we have a good amount of the varsity games on film. If you are interested in borrowing these let me know, I will get them to you.
Thanks for sticking with this season, there were many hurdles to overcome. I appreciate all of your help and understanding. Enjoy the Dinner on May 16th, unfortunately I will not be there, but I expect that you will all go and have a great time. I am already looking forward to next season.
