Lacrosse in Charlotte Mecklenburg School’s (CMS) is an exciting spring activity that offers our high school boys and girls with fantastic athletic opportunities. Butler High School has historically fielded both men and women Varsity and Junior Varsity lacrosse teams.
Lacrosse within CMS is currently a club sport. This means that the many CMS high schools that field lacrosse teams are organized, managed, and financially supported by parent Booster Clubs. The Butler Lacrosse Club was organized and has subsequently fielded teams since 2002.
The various CMS high school lacrosse clubs are currently working with CMS and The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) in an attempt to further organize and compete at the same level that other CMS sanctioned sports do. The differences between this level of organization and a fully sanctioned team are primarily how the programs are funded and managed.
"CMS intends to eventually sanction Lacrosse; however, it will not happen in the next two years” said CMS Athletic Director. That said, we expect lacrosse will be sanctioned in the not too distant future making it the first sport sanctioned by CMS in over 20 years.
